Black Shark 2: Xiaomi’s first gaming handset that will soon hit Indian shores

Mobile gaming has picked up steam in the past couple of years with the rise of the battle royale genre. Graphic intensive titles like PUBG and Fortnite require demanding specs to run on extreme settings; specs that only flagship smartphones offer.

While gaming handsets have mainly been capable of providing similar or more power than premium flagship smartphones, they often tend to cost the same and are found lacking in terms of the overall smartphone experience, which brings us to Xiaomi’s Black Shark gaming smartphone.

Xiaomi unveiled its first gaming phone in 2018, titled the ‘Black Shark’. However, the phone, like most gaming smartphones at the time, simply failed to impress and never made its way to Indian shores. Enter the Black Shark 2, Xiaomi’s second attempt at the gaming handset. On paper, the Black Shark 2 looks more impressive than its predecessor ever did.

A recent report from BGR suggests that the Black Shark 2 will launch in India on May 27. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification Xiaomi recently received for the Black Shark 2 all but confirmed the news of the launch of the handset in India.

The Black Shark 2 is priced at CNY3,200 in China, which roughly translates to Rs 32,537. However, the inclusion of GST could see the price of the device rise to somewhere between Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000.

And, while we can only speculate about the price at this time, what we do know is that the Black Shark 2 is a pretty formidable handset. The Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6GB of RAM, going up to 12GB on the top-tier model, offer unparallel performance.

The OLED panel on the Black Shark 2 is another significant improvement on last year’s model, which featured an LCD panel. Xiaomi’s latest gaming headset also sports a 4,000 mAh battery with 27W fast-charging support.

Xiaomi has also made improvements in the camera department incorporating a 48-megapixel primary shooter coupled with a 12-megapixel secondary camera on the back panel, while a 20-megapixel selfie camera sits on the front of the device. The Black Shark 2 is also reported to arrive with a few accessories such as Gamepad 2.0 controller, among others.
