HP unveils a convertible compact VR gaming desktop

The full package – the Desktop, the port and the harness will cost an enthusiastic gamer $3100, which is close to Rs 2 lakhs.

HP stunned the world last year with its Omen X Compact backpack concept designed especially for VR gaming. The issue with the concept was that a machine designed specifically for VR gaming would find only a few takers. To make the concept of the backpack more practical, HP has added a dock to the backpack PC and made it available for sale, for a price of roughly Rs 1.6 lakhs.

The compact gaming desktop packs in serious gaming internals. For starters, it has NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080 GPU along with a 7th generation Intel Core i7 Kaby Lake processor, which is enough to power high-quality visuals in VR headsets. You also get the usual 1TB PCIe SSD for the storage and up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM. It also gets three USB 3.1 Type-C ports, HDMia combo audio jaHDMI 2.0 and a Vive power out port for VR headset.

The dock for the backpack PC adds five additional USB Type-A ports and one more a USB Type-C port, Ethernet, HDMI 2.0 and a Display port. The dock can instantly transform the PC from a VR gaming machine to a regular gaming desktop. The dock can always stay connected with a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers and will only need the backpack PC to be attached to it for providing a desktop gaming experience.

The optional $599 backpack harness can convert the PC into a full-on tetherless VR gaming machine. The harness has four batteries, a charging dock and a short headset cable for the HTC Vive. The harness also gets angled vents to direct the heat away from the body.

HP will sell the backpack accessory and the Omen X Compact Desktop separately. The full package – the Desktop, the port and the harness will cost an enthusiastic gamer $3100, which is close to Rs 2 lakhs
